Abstract
1,195,022. Generating combustion products under pressure. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. and CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. Aug. 4, 1967 [Aug. 6, 1966], No.35293/66. Heading F1L. A tubular combustion chamber of the kind constructed from flat-sided tubes sealingly secured together side-by-side throughout their lengths and through which coolant is passed, includes a pipe communicating with the interior of the combustion chamber through a transverse aperture formed through at least one of the tubes, the pipe being bounded by two part-annular non-communicating chambers extending throughout substantially the whole length of the pipe, one of these chambers communicating with the downstream end of the upstream portion of each tube interrupted by the pipe and the other chamber communicating with the upstream end of the downstream portion, coolant being extracted from the upstream portion through the one chamber and further coolant being introduced into the downstream portion through the other chamber at such pressure that the rate of heat transfer through the upstream and downstream portions is substantially the same as through corresponding portions of an uninterrupted tube. A combustion chamber for a MHD generator, constructed as described in Specification 1,195, 022 from flat-sided tubes 1 sealingly secured together throughout their lengths, comprises a pipe 5 communicating with the interior of the combustion chamber and interrupting several of the tubes. The pipe 5 may be used for passing a fluid into or out of the combustion chamber or may contain an inspection window of quartz &c. or a transverse wall apertured to receive a probe. The annular space between the inner and outer walls 6, 7 of the pipe is divided by partitions 8 into chambers 9, 10. Coolant (e. g. water) flowing through the upstream portions 1a of the tubes 1 interrupted by the pipe 5 passes through the chamber 9 to an outlet connection 14. Fresh coolant is introduced via an inlet connection 15 and the chamber 10 to flow through the downstream portions 1b of the interrupted tubes 1. The rate of flow through the portions 1a, 1b is such that the rate of heat transfer is substantially the same as for the corresponding portions of the uninterrupted tubes 1.
