Abstract

1324929 Power plant MAGMA ENERGY INC 15 Nov 1971 52954/71 Heading F1Q [Also in Division F4] A method of generating electrical power from geothermal energy comprises providing access through a well 10 to a source of geothermal hot water having a temperature (240‹F - 400‹F) above the flash point for atmospheric pressure, and conducting a stream of said water into heat exchange relationship (42, 46, 50) with a power fluid, preferably isobutane, that is employed in a closed Rankine heat engine cycle to drive electric generator means 68. The hot water is restrained from flashing into steam by pressurization so as to transfer the heat energy from said water to the power fluid in a maximum Rankine cycle temperature range and to prevent mineral precipitation from the geothermal water. A pressure gradient above the saturation vapour pressure of the geothermal water is maintained from the source through said heat exchange apparatus by a deep well pump 24 adjacent said source of water. The stream of geothermal fluid that was pumped out of the ground from the well 10 flows back into the ground via an injection well 56. In operation, the power fluid from the heat exchangers, still in vapour form, leaves the turbines 66 through exhaust conduits 70 which pass the power fluid through condensers 72 into a receiver 86. A separate water cooling circuit extracts waste heat from the power fluid, and includes a conduit 100 which conducts cooling water from a cooling tower 98 to a pump 102 which circulates the cooling water through the condensers 78.
