Abstract

1324104 Charging shaft furnaces ARMCO STEEL CORP 15 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 44039/70 Heading F4B Apparatus for charging a shaft furnace 10 comprises a coaxial upward extension 14 of the casing 16 to which is welded frusto-conical sections 28, 28a of superposed hoppers 24, 26 with delivery shoots 32, 32a, a pipe 18 being provided so that the space defined between extension 14 and the hopper 24 may be either exhausted or supplied with gas. Either the shoot 32a or a telescopic extension 32b thereof may have a downwardly flaring flange (38, Fig. 2) to inhibit flow of lumpy material over the surface of charge material piled in the furnace shaft 10. The flange may be perforated enabling the passage of gas. The apparatus also enables the operating pressure within the furnace to be maintained at a desired level.
