Abstract

1323557 Knitting machines COURTAULDS Ltd 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 58508/69 Heading D1C Yarn is fed to a flat bed knitting machine from a stationary source by a yarn feeder which traverses the needle bed and, before it passes through the feeder, means form a loop of yarn whose length is varied at the end of the feeder traverse in time with the traverse to prevent substantial build up of tension in the yarn. As shown, in a parallel machine, a rail 10 supports, sliding between stops 13, 13', two yarn carriers 12, 11 releasably connected by a catch 24 carrier 11 having a peg 35 engaging the cam box. These support arms 14, 18 carrying respectively a ceramic eyelet 15 and ceramic eyelets 17, 23 and a yarn feeder 19. The yarn passes through guides to eyelets 22, 23, 15, 17 and feeder 19 to form a loop between carriers 11 and 12. As carriers 11, 12 approach stop 13 a cam plate 30 disengages catch 24 to halt carrier 12 while 11 moves on until peg 35 is disengaged. This reduces the distance between eyelet 15 and eyelets 17, 23 giving extra yarn to prevent the stitches from being pulled tight at the end of a course. The carriers are not disconnected on approaching stop 13'. In another arrangement, two carriers 51, 52 mounted on opposite sides of a double sided carrier rail 53 of a parallel machine are connected to their associated cam boxes by pegs 66, 67 and carry respectively a ceramic eyelet 54 on arm 55 and ceramic eyelets 57, 58 and feeder 56 and yarn passes through the eyelets 58, 54, 57 to feeder 56. When moving towards the end of the traverse away from the yarn supply, approching stop 63, carriers 51, 52 move together until peg 66 is disengaged arrested by a stop 63 while carrier 51 move shortening the distance between eyelet 54 and feeder 56 and providing extra yarn. The length of arm 55 may be reduced by spacing pegs 66, 67 apart along rail 53. The ceramic eyelets may be replaced by pulleys. In a further arrangement, yarn feeder 110 is mounted on a carrier 111 traversing the needle beds on a carrier rail 12, its movement being limited by stops. Yarn guides 11, 13, 114 are secured to carrier 111 and a third guide 115 is secured to a slide block 116 slidable in a slot 117 in carrier 111. A cam follower 118 on block 116 engages a cam track 119 in an adjustable fixed plate. Yarn is fed via guides 113, 115, 114 to form a loop 122 and, as the carrier moves to the end of a traverse, the cam rack 119 causes the guides 115 to move so that the loop can be taken up in the knitting. In a modification of this arrangement, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown) the yarn guides 113, 114 are stationary and guide 115 is mounted to move perpendicular to the needle beds while the cam track moves wih the cam box. In a further modification, Fig. 14 (not shown) guide 115 is moved by a pneumatic piston and cylinder arrangement, the valve being controlled by limit switches 133, 134.
