Abstract

1322709 Transformers D F BINNS 24 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 47043/69 Heading HIT To enable a single or multiphase transformer to take a heavy lagging reactive current closed conducting rings or windings are provided for each phase. These rings may be of heavy section conducting material (copper or aluminium), e.g. of clylindrical form or may be wires of Nb or NbTi alloy or a fibre of No 3 Sw on a suitable base maintained at superconducting temperature. The rings may be gapped the gaps being opened e.g. by moving conducting sections spanning the gaps, or the superconductivity being removed from the rings or from successive rings when the heavy reactive current is not required. According to the Provisional Specification extra magnetizing current may be obtained by opening gaps in the transformer core or by energizing D.C. saturating windings passing through core slots.
