Abstract

1,230,579. Transformers. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. 2 Aug., 1968 [24 July, 1967], No. 33883/67. Heading H1T. [Also in Division H2] A superconducting transformer has a protective winding 11 (Fig. 1) of normal conductive material (copper) in a parallel circuit with and having the same number of turns as each of its superconductive windings 10, means being provided to divert the current from the superconducting winding to the normal winding on the occurrence of a short circuit fault. These diverting means comprise at least a resistor 13 or 12 in series with one or each of the windings 11, 10 having in series (14) or parallel (15) therewith a (vacuum) switch 14, 15 which opens .(14) or closes (15) on the occurrence of short circuit fault conditions. Switch 15 is closed quickly and switch 14 is opened within a half cycle. When the short circuit conditions are past the switches are returned to their original settings. The windings may be arranged in interleaved sections the sections 54, 57 (Fig. 7) which protect the primary sections 50, 51 being arranged between and adjacent the latter while the secondary sections 52, 53 are arranged in the middle with their protective sections 55, 56 on each side. The superconducting windings are formed of niobium plated on copper. The protective windings may be formed of a copper conductor having about 30 transposed strips each of a thickness equal to about <SP>1</SP>/ 30 of the skin depth and this conductor may have a coating of niobium to reduce eddy current losses.
