Abstract

1,048,625. Super-conductor devices. AVCO CORPORATION. May 22, 1963 [Aug. 27, 1962], No. 48699/65. Divided out of 1,048,624. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H2] A multi-layer super-conductor coil for providing a strong magnetic field comprises lowresistance electrical shunts across portions of the coil and means for inhibiting the inductive coupling between layers; the shunts may be provided by a continuous coating. Fig. 7 shows an embodiment in which copper shields 61-63 enclose portions of the windings of superconductor coil 64, three layers lying between each adjacent pair of shields. Each shield has switchable connections so that it can be shortcircuited or terminated by a low resistance 71 to 73. Shunt resistors 77-82 are connected across individual portions of the super-conductor coil and these act to dissipate energy which is released when the coil goes normal as described in the parent Specification. In addition, the effect of inductive coupling between these portions of the coil is reduced by shields 61-63, the effectivity of which can be varied by varying the terminal resistances. Diode rectifiers may be used in place of resistors across the shield terminal connections or in place of the shunt resistors 77-82. Alternatively mechanical switching means sensitive to current or other conditions in the coil may be used to connect a low or a high resistance selectively across the shield connections or portions of the superconducting coil.
