1321789 Winding webs PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO Inc 10 March 1972 11358/72 Heading B8R A web winding machine has a frame supporting a pair of winding cores or mandrels 19, 21, movable knife means 50, means, e.g. a rider roll 22, to coact with the mandrel 21 not being wound to define a web trapping pocket, and air jet means 36 for directing a leading edge of a severed web into said pocket, the air jet means having a recess to receive said knife means during web severance. The knife means is mounted on arms 27 pivotably supported on the frame and is transversely reciprocable to sever the web. The rider roll 22 is mounted on arms 31 pivotably supported on the arms 27 whilst the air jet means 36, equipped with a plurality of air passages (38), Fig. 3 (not shown), is mounted on arms 40 pivotably supported on the frame. The cores or core carrying mandrels, are mounted on a pivotable turret and when a core or mandrel 19 is fully wound it is moved along an orbital path from the winding position and a fresh one 21 substituted, this position being shown in Fig. 6. During winding the arms 27 are raised, and the arms 40 lowered, relative to their illustrated positions, the rider roll 22 being allowed to rest on the web roll. To facilitate the substitution of the cores or mandrels however, the rider roll arms 31 are raised out of the orbital path whilst the fresh core or mandrel 21 takes up the winding position, the arms 27, 31 then being lowered and the arms 40 raised to sever the web and blow the new leading web edge on to the core or mandrel 21. The frame and ancilliary means may be duplicated in the machine to allow two webs to be wound simultaneously. Tubular webs may be slit longitudinally before being wound.
