In view of the fact that the greater 'po'rtionof the apparatus shown in the drawing is of old and well-known construction, a. detailed description thereof will not be necessary. In winding apparatus, a frame, a movable support member mounted thereon, a plurality of spaced mandrels carried by said support and having suction openings therein, each of said mandrels being movable by said support into a web-winding position and a non-winding position, means for rotating a mandrel when in winding position and means for creating suction in the suction openings of the mandrel when-the same is in winding position, removable cores provided with openings communicating with the suction openings in said mandrels, and cutting means operative when the winding mandrel is moved to a non-winding position and another mandrelis moved to a winding position'ior cutting the web between said last-mentioned mandrels and directing the leading severed end portion into the pneumatic grip of the mandrel in winding position.

In winding apparatus, a frame, a movable support member mounted thereon, a plurality oi spaced mandrels carried by said support and having suction openings therein, each oi said -mandrels being movable by said support into a web-winding position and a non-winding position,'means for rotating a mandrel when in winding position, means for creating suction in the suction openings of a mandrel when the i same is in winding position, removable friction faces, said mandrels having a central suction passage and radial passages communicating with said grooves, each of said mandrels being movable by rotation of said support into a web-winding position and anon-winding position, means for rotating a mandrel when in winding position, means for creating suction in the central suction passage of the mandrel when it is in winding position, removable friction cores extending over said mandrels and covering said grooves, means engageable with said grooves for forming slots in said cores aligned with said grooves, and cut ting means operative when the winding mandrel is moved to a non-windingposition and another mandrel is moved to a winding position for cutting the web between said last-mentioned mandrels.

In winding apparatus, a frame, a rotatable support member mounted thereon, three spaced mandrels carried by said supporinand having spaced grooves extending about their periphery, said mandrels also having a central suction passage and radial passages establishing communication between said central passage and said grooves, each of said mandrels being movable by rotation of said support intoweb-winding position and two non-winding positions, the mandrels in non-winding positions being adapted to receive new cores, and cutting meanssupported adjacent one of said non-winding positions for engaging the core and cutting therethrough into the grooves to form aligned slots with said' grooves, and cutting means operative when the winding mandrel is moved to a non-winding position and another mandrel is moved to winding position for cutting the web between ,said.lastmentioned mandrels.
