Abstract

1321302 Skid rails for furnaces BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 13923/70 Heading F4B Skid rails or walking beams for continuous reheating furnaces each comprise a triangular section water-cooled pipe 9 with channel section rails 10 welded thereto at 15 and formed of welded rail lengths each bearing a number of V-shaped grooves 20 spaced along its length. The grooves which are cast in the rail, extend across the bearing surface 11 and down the rail limbs 12 to holes 22. Layers of thermal insulating material 17 are fixed to the pipe 9 at points 18 by reinforcing mesh within it, the gap between the material 17 and the rail 10 being filled with refractory 19. The rail ends are chamfered and have recesses 25 so that on welding together they form grooves and associated holes. In a modification (Figs. 4-6) the underside of the rails are formed with grooves below the grooves 20 and the holes 22 are nearer the bottom of the limbs 12. The rail ends also do not coincide with a groove.
