Abstract
1319510 Marine propulsion A P PEDRICK 8 Dec 1970 58201/70 Heading B7V In a marine propulsion unit of the same general form as that described in Specifications 997,738, 1,066,049 and 1,066,050, a flash distillation process is employed to obviate saltscaling. The propulsion unit is a jet-propulsion unit in which the jet is produced by stream derived from boiling the water through which the associated ship is to be propelled, a pump being driven by the same steam and the water to be boiled being delivered to the boiler by this pump. To prevent salt-scaling, salt water entering the propulsion tube at one end, 2, is impelled by the pump 4 to enter a plurality of smaller tubes 7 which are in heat-exchange relationship with the indicated flow path from and to the heat source via the pipes 11 and 12. The tubes 7 have fine nozzles 10 at their outlet ends, and the effect is stated to be that water under pressure at a temperature above 100‹ C. is the only medium in any of the pipes and tubes. On emerging from the nozzles, however, boiling takes place immediately, producing the required steam jet. Any precipitation of salt scale at this stage is carried away by the steam jets. As they emerge, the jets impinge on turbine blades 6 which drive the pump 4. The propulsion unit may be applied to a variety of marine craft some examples of which are depicted in Figs. 2 to 8 (not shown).
