1318659 Packaging non-fluent, tacky, materials THICKOL CHEMICAL CORP 7 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 13788/71 Heading B8C Apparatus for packing a crumbly, tacky, non- fluent, composition, such as an illuminant composition for a flare, comprises a segmenting device 10 which reduces the mass of uncured illuminant to small segments 14 which fall into a long, vibrated, tray 16 which continually urges them forward, forms them into rounded pellets 15, and delivers them into a tubular case 22, supported upon a rotating table 24, a tamping mechanism 26 having a tamping rod 28 for compacting the pellets into a solid mass in the flare case 22. A shredding disc 52, having a number of upwardly-extending, knife-edged, scoops 54 and positioned over corresponding holes 58 in the disc 52, is mounted on a vertical shaft 42 which is rotated by a drive shaft 44 through bevel gearing 48, 50, a plurality of radially extending baffle plates 60 extending radially between the shaft hub 40 and the former wall 10. Rough edges on the segments 14 are rounded off as they strike the vibrating tray. The tamping mechanism 26 comprises a rotary drive 62, a crank 64, and a clutch 70 which automatically adjusts the functional length of the tamping rod 28 as the level of the illuminant rises. The head 74 of the tamper is wedgeshaped to exert a greater pressure upon the illuminant 30, and it extends radially from the centre to a wall of the case 22 which is held by a clamp 84 on the rotary table 24. The surfaces of the apparatus contacted by the illuminant are desirably made of, or coated with, polytetrafluoroethylene.
