provement in lTamping-Machines, and do hereby-declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates particularly to a i machine adapted to be used in the-tamping of explosives or other materials to be filledA into shells. The object of our invention is to provide a machine of this character which will fill shells and bombs of many different Vsizes with explosives or other materials that are dryf'or moist, to a predetermined density, even when most difficult mixtures of -malterials are used.

Each cshell 11` rests lupon a cup-shaped 'support 13, having a downwardly-directed projection 14, provided with a tapered recess 15 to receive afcentel` point 16 carried by a piston 17, which reciprocates in a cylinderlS, supplied with com-4 pressed air by afpipe 19. .The cup-shaped support 13 is rotated in an inclined position by frictional contact with a friction wheel 2O located on aV shaft 21` and lpressed against a support 13 by a spring 22 located between: one of 'a pair-of vbearings'23 -and 24 for' the shaft 21'and a drivingpulley 25. .The driving pulley. 25 is rotated by a belt 26, passing over a pulley/'27, -on a'shaft 2 8, supported in` a bearmg 28aA fromfth upright. 3, which shaft carries a larger pulley 29,!driven by a belt 30 from a pulley31ona main drivmg, shaft' 32, supported 0n the upright 3 'by a bearingf33. The shaft 32 is' drlven by means of va pulley 34 carried thereon and a belt"35 ton 38, to which is "attached-a tamping rod 39, having astop-40 to coperate with 'a frictional driving member 41, 'which is 'com-` ousing 43, carrying a pluralitybf thumbscrews 44 toad u'st the. pressure upon`v the connected with "any suitable'source ofpower.

By this means the rod 39 is reciprocated. Around the rod 39 there is located a rotary sleeve 47 carrying a pulley 48, driven by a belt 49, passing over an idler 50' and .over a driving'pulley 51 on shaft 32. On the outside 0f the sleeve 47 there is a largerv 'sleeve' 53,v carrying a bevel gear 54, which is driven by a bevel gear 55 on the shaft 28.` The sleeve carries a spiral stirrer 56, which is located in a hopper 57, while the sleeve 47l carries a. helical blade 58 located in the mouth ofsaid hopper 57, which is designed toproject into the shell 11. Within the shell 11, the tamping rod 39 carriesa head 59,
' having a tapered end 60, the side of which is substantially parallel t0 the nearest portion of the inclined inner surface of the shell 1l.. Said head 59 may be made of wood, brass, steel or hard rubber, or any other suitable material.4 f.
In the operation vof our invention, the
, shells 11 will be fed forwardly from time y tamping rod 39, which has been previously withdrawn byl operating the air cylinder 36, so that vthe cup-shaped support 13 rests upon the pin or plunger 15 and the edge of said support 13 is in contact with the friction wheel 20', the air cylinder 36 is operated to move the rod 39 downwardly tothe lowest position available in the shell l1. Power is thereafter applied to the -tamping machine V'by the .belt 35, and the materials, as for example explosives in the form of dry grains, are fed int-o the hopper 57. The t'amping rod' 39 will be continually reciprocated by the friction driving member 41, while the said shell 11 will be continually rotated by the friction wheel '20 in an. inclined position. The stirrer 56- will keep the materials in a continual state of agitation in .the hopper 57, so that they will lbe easily 'and uniformly fed from ,the same while the blade 58 will fee-d vthefmaterials from the hopper 57 intov the shell vl1. 'As the materials in the shell gradually 'accumulate and are packed in.

When at yany time during the tamping operations, 'or at .the end of the tamping operation, it is desired to withdraw the tamplng rod 39this may be do'ne by the o' eration bf'thezair. cylinder 3.6, 'the stop lop# erating to limit the upward movement of said tamping rod.
When the tamping operation has been completed and the tamping rod 39 has been withdrawn, they air cylinder 18 will be op- 70 erated to lower the cup-shaped support 13 onto the truck 10, after which the truck may lbe lmoved forwardly to convey away thev lilled shellA and permit other shells to be drawn into place in succession beneath the 75 tamping machine, to'be filled in the' same manner as above described. n
lt will be understood that, if different materials are to be packed into a particular shell in the form of strata, this may be read- Vily done by feeding one material at one time and thereafter feeding vanother maades, etc.-
