CYLINDER-FILLING MACHINE.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Application filed August 30, 1919, Serial No. 320,851. Renewed December 14, 1920. Serial No. 430,746.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT FRANK Wnsr- LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invgnted certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder- Filling Machines, of which the following is\ a full, clear, and exact description.
At the present time the storage of compressed, dissolved, acetylene, for its various industrial uses, is effected in steel or other suitable metal containers filled with a porous substance, into which a proper quan tity of a suitable solvent for acetylene, such as acetone, is added, which solvent readily takes up the proper proportion of gas charged into the cylinder under pressure.
Practical considerations, in some cases, demand that the steel or other metal container, have only a small orifice, at the time the porous substance is stance must be added, which porous substance, at the time off filling into the cylina wet mixture of small pieces of charcoal and kieselguhr, together with cement or such other materials as are now known or used for the purpose.
The problem of filling the containers with this or an equivalent substance is by no means a simple one nor easy of accomplishment, but I have devised an apparatus for the purpose which fully meets all of the exacting demands of such an operation.
This apparatus generally stated comprises a hopper with a contracted outlet overlying the orifice of a container, and provided with a reciprocatory plunger, and a plurality of rotating and reciprocating tam-pers which force the substance down under the plunger enabling the operation of the latter to force it down through'the orifice into the container.
Suitably constructed means may be employed for' automatically. effecting the necessary operations of the plunger and the tampers, andmeansmay also be employed for jarring'the container so as to cause'the I filled into the cylinder, through which orifice the porous subinjected substance to properly settle and completely fill its interior;
This apparatus is the subject of my prescomplete apparatus.
Fig. 2 1s a similar view of the same but from another side.
Fig. ,3 is an enlarged detail of the filling mechanism, the hopper being shown in section, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same parts, but in a'difierent operative position.
Similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Except in so far as may be particularly pointed out herein, the specific construction of the parts or elements comprised in my apparatus are not-of the essence of my invention. With this understanding it may be I described as comprising a suitablesupporting frame 1, having a horizontal support 2 for a funnel shaped hopper The frame has, preferably, a movable bottom 4, for the container 5, they orifice 6 of which is immediately under outlet 7 of the hopper 3'.
In the upper part of the frame 1 is mounted a drive shaft 8 having a pulley 9, a crank 10, and a {crank reciprocates the end of the contractedbeveled pinion 11. The
a. plunger. 12 through the cylindrical and contractedoutlet To a sleeve 13-rotatably mounted-Eon the plunger 12 is fixed a horizontal arm 14:, to
the opposite ends of which are pivoted top membrsof double levers 15, lower members of which constitute tampers working in the lower part of the hopper and having a reciprocating motion imparted *to them by their connection with the plunger. Theupper members 15 are pivoted at 16 to arms .17 secured to a large gear wheel 18 engaged and rotated by a pinion 19 in the I gear with the shaft 8, and hence have a of that of the movement the exact converse plunger. As the latter rises, therefore the tampers force the material down to the bottom of the hopfper when it will be met by the plunger and orced out of the hopper and into the container.
The arms 17 are extended down below the pivotal points 16 and have bifurcated ends 15, and by which engage the lowerm hers 15, the
means of thesearms a constant rotary mo tion is imparted to the tampers.
T0 the lower part of theirame on eachside are secured rackets 19 uaffordin bearings for-a shaft 20 having rigid era arms .21. One. of these arms isconnected by}; link 22 with the short,
arm of a crank'pivoted at 23, the other arm of which is a -han- -dle or lever 24. By the operationof this lever the shaft 20 is oscillated and by this means a jolting or jarrin movement is imparted to the bottom.4
dit is jolted or jarred vby the means mass.
Theabove described elements comprise themain and essential parts of my improved apparatus,- andno more detailed description v of their operation or-mode of use, is re- 25 "in no essential respect from those heretofore practised in the art.' Manifestly', the filling machine may be applied to various purposes quired, as these willbe readily understood by thoseskilledinthis art. The same is true of the subsequent "treatmentor pre aration of the filled. containers, as these di er besides the one specifically mentioned.
" WhatI- claim as my invention is: v
1. In ,a device of thekind herein de-v scribed, the combination with a suitable o tating an y means of con-' necting links 25,:and as the container is be-" ing fil 'e I described, whereby its contents are settled in .amore compact and-evenly distributed-- substance, a stance out through an outlet, means for. reciprocating I the plun r, ta'm'pers connected'wit v a I v I 4. v supporting frame of a hopper for contain-- ing the filling sulistance, andhavinga contracted outlet'at the bottom, a reciprocatin plun er therein for forcing o h the outlet and a plurality of roreclprocating tampers adapted to force the 4 under the plun r.

In testimony whereof I have mama fixed my s ature.
