Abstract

1316672 Screwing-up machines J M REICH 4 May 1970 21234/70 Heading B3N [Also in Divisions B4 and B8] A machine or tool, e.g. pneumatically or electrically actuated for driving headed screws into a workpiece, comprises a feed channel 116 through which a carrier strip 115, e.g. of plastics and screws 114 mounted thereon can pass into a driving channel 107 in which a rotary shaft 108 is reciprocable; feed channel extensions which provide recesses 123, 122 in the driving channel wall into which project respectively the heads of the screws and the carrier strips; and an opening 124 in the driving channel wall through which the part of the strip from which screws have been driven can pass. Prior to a driving operation the axis of the leading screw is parallel to but offset from the rotary shaft axis. Upon pressing the tool against a workpiece, motor 102 is caused to move relative to housing 101 and simultaneously plate 128 locked to rotary shaft 108 by ball 131 engaging in groove 132 is caused to move. During its movement the plate 128 will force the leading screw towards the workpiece and away from the strip due to contact of the screw with cam surfaces 125, 126. The leading screw is then held and centred by spring-biased jaws 139. Movement of the plate is halted by a shoulder (not shown) and further movement of the rotary shaft 108 is permitted by alignment of the ball 131 with a spring-urged piston 134.
