Abstract
1316200 Obtaining nickel or cobalt INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 7 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 31957/71 Heading C7D Oxygen-containing compounds of nickel or cobalt are reduced in a bath of the molten metal having a dissolved O 2 content of at least 0À01% by a carbonaceous reducing agent that reacts with the dissolved O 2 to form CO which is burnt above the bath to provide heat. The resucing agent may be coal, coke, charcoal or a liquid hydrocarbon, which may be incorporated into briquettes of the compound. The compound may be Ni or Co hydroxide, oxide, basic carbonate or nitrate. The O 2 content may be maintained by top-blowing, for instance in a rotary furnace. Fuel may be burned above the bath to provide additional heat. Before teeming, the O 2 content of the bath may be lowered by terminating the addition of oxide to the bath. Volatile impurities may be removed by vacuum treatment, during which oxygen-containing gas may be blown into the bath. Turbulence may be maintained in the bath mechanically, magnetically or by blowing. The bath temperature should be kept at least 50 C. above its melting point. The bath may be finally deoxidized with C, Si, Mg, Al or Ca-Si or by lancing with CH 4 or other hydrocarbons.
