Abstract

1316173 Superconducting machine rotors INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 15230/70 Headings H2A A superconducting electrical machine rotor comprises a generally cylindrical assembly of mutually electrically insulated flat coils 1 of varying width, lying in chordal planes and bound together by electrical insulation 4, each coil being of superconducting material and wound around an electrically insulating former 2. The formers 2 may be of synthetic resin reinforced by woven glass fibre sheet, and the binding insulation 4 may be of synthetic resin reinforced with carbon fibres. As shown at 1a ... 1l the width of the coil conductors may vary around the rotor, and the insulation 4 may be built up to form a splined joint with conical end members 5 which are integral with stub shafts located in bearings. The coils may form the D.C. field winding of an A.C. generator and may be cooled by cryogenic fluid supplied through ducts in the end members to cooling tubes adjacent the coils 1 and within the insulation 3, 4.
