Abstract

1360387 Conductors for electrical machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 25 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 31315/70 Heading H2A [Also in Division H1] A conductor 1, for an electrical machine, comprises a plurality of individually-insulated subconductors 2 disposed in at least one ring around a central axis of the conductor and each being helically wound around the axis and comprising a central duct 4 around which is disposed a series of conductor strands 3 each of approximately circular ring sector cross-section thereby forming a sub-conductor of generally circular cross-section, and the voids 8 between the sub-conductors are filled by an electrical insulating material, e.g. a resin. The subconductors may be arranged in mutually insulated concentric rings and may be then, as shown, or may not be, a central sub-conductor. The strands are also helically wound around the ducts 4 of the individual sub-conductors, are mutually insulated by varnish 5, and are enclosed by a material 6 which may be an epoxy resin tape or a stainless steel tube respectively soldered or brazed to a liquid, e.g. water, or gaseous, coolant header 9 which directs the coolant to the ducts 4. The conductor is applicable to the non-superconducting stator winding of a synchronous A.C. generator having an either superconducting or non-superconducting rotor winding.
