1289092 AC generators having superconducting windings INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH and DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 14 Oct 1969 [15 July 1968] 33683/68 Heading H2A In an A.C. generator having a stationary superconducting winding 10, 11 for generating a magnetic field D which is cut by conductors 14 of a rotor 13 to generate an alternating e.m.f. therein, compensating means are provided for generating a magnetic field C in opposition to that A produced by current in the rotor conductors. The field C may neutralize the field A. or alternatively exert on the winding 10, 11 a torque opposing that resulting from current flow in the rotor conductors, and as shown is created by fixed coils 15 supplied with direct excitation current which may be varied, or the coils 15 moved, to vary the compensating field directions. The rotor conductors 14 may form a lPho or a polyphase winding and be of either a superconducting material, or a non- superconducting material cooled to a very low temperature. High pressure helium is used to cool the superconducting winding wires, which may be hollow. The coils 15 may have an independent current supply to carry the rotor conductor current; in the latter case, the coils 15 are connected to two stationary commutators engaged by pairs of rotary brushes connected to the rotor conductor loops, and rotary brushes are connected to the load via slip rings.
