1315883 Cases F N KOLOMEIR 24 Aug 1971 [11 Sept 1970 30 Nov 1970] 39638/71 Heading B8P [Also in Division B6] A marking appliance comprises a casing 3, Fig. 4, carrying a number of marking units 7, 7B, 7C &c., in tandem, each unit having means which when the unit becomes the leading unit co-operates with means on the front end of the casing to locate and maintain that unit in a marking position. Also, preferably means are provided for temporarily connecting the units, so that withdrawal of the leading unit when it is used up, causes all the units to be moved forwardly in the casing, and the second unit to be moved into marking position. As shown, each unit has a reduced part 11 holding a pencil lead 21, but the marking means may be a crayon, a pen with an ink cartridge, a stylus or a cosmetic pencil. The part 11 extends from a body part 9 of larger diameter having a groove 33 formed with a shoulder 35 near its forward end. An integral or separate front part 31 of the casing 3 is formed with spring tongues 37 by slitting, and these tongues engage the groove 33 of the leading unit to hold that unit in writing position and to prevent rearward movement of the unit. The inner surface 23 of the body part 9 recessed to receive the lead 21 has a smaller diameter than the part 11, but the part 9 is slotted at 51 so that the rear end can expand and grip the leading part 11 of a following unit 7B to detachably connect the units. A series of units so connected can be loaded on to the casing through the rear end of the casing if that end is open, or if the rear end is closed, the loading can be effected at the front end if the front part 31 is first removed from the casing. A member (55, Fig. 5) may be insertable in the open rear end of the casing to prevent the units from falling out of the easing.
