Abstract

1315485 Sealing lids to containers UNITED GLASS Ltd 17 Aug 1970 [20 Aug 1969] 41544/69 Heading B8C A metal foil container 2 having a wrinkled rim 4 is hermetically sealed to a lid 8 having a coating 10 of hot melt adhesive on at least that part of the lid opposing the rim, by pressing the lid against the rim and submitting the assembly to induction heating to melt the adhesive. As shown in Fig. 2, the containers 2 are supported by their rims in trough-shaped carriers 22 carried on a resilient conveyer chain 20. The lids 8 which may be in continuous form and may be placed over the containers before, after, or at the same time as the latter are placed in the carriers 22, are pressed into contact with the rims 4 by means of a pressure belt 40 and a pressure plate 48 containing radio frequency induction coils 50. The pressure exerted by the belt 40 and pressure plate 48 is maintained beyond the heating zone whilst the adhesive solidifies, at least partially. Fans may be used to assist cooling. The tension of the pressure belt 40 is adjustable by means of a tensioning device 46 and the vertical position of the pressure plate 48 is variable. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the carriers (60) each comprise an upper part (64) mounted on compression springs (68) seated on a base part (62). The container may have internal partitions to which the lid may also be secured. The lid may additionally be crimped round the container rim. The adhesives used may be blends of ethylene-vinylacetate and wax or may be based on polyamide resins and their admixture with other resins and/or waxes. The pressure belt 40 may be of PTFE-impregnated glass fibre or may be faced with silicon sponge rubber and the lower face of the belt 48 is coated with PTFE. The containers are removed from a hopper by a sucker pad on a reciprocating arm, dropped into the carriers and filled before having lids applied thereto.
