1314594 Branching pipes; joint-making packing CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO 24 July 1970 [28 July 1969] 36130/70 Headings F2B and F2G A main pipe 16 and a branch, shown as a double-ended nozzle system 19, have an interengaging hole and spigot 17, 36 retained in engagement by springs 39 &c. In the form shown, a saddle 29 on the branch 19 has corner holes 28 receiving the ends of springs 39, the other ends of the springs engaging the ends of straps 38 lying across the main pipe 16. The spigot 36 is formed as part of the branch and is received in the hole 17 in the main pipe 16. A gasket 31 lies between the main pipe 16 and the saddle 29. In a modification in which the branch is a single nozzle system (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), a separate saddle insert (29<SP>1</SP>) is received in the branch and is provided with the spigot (36). Gaskets.-The gasket 31, Fig. 5, is rectangular in plan view and is provided with a peripheral bead 41 along one or both faces: it may be curved in cross-section, as shown, to conform to the shape of the saddle branch. For use with a main pipe 16 of lesser diameter than the recess in the saddle 29, the gasket 31 may be made of decreasing thickness inwards from its two ends 42.
