Abstract

1314467 Protective suits COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 21 July 1971 [24 July 1970] 34147/71 Heading A3V [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] A protective suit for use in a deleterious atmosphere comprises a body portion 52 of impermeable and flexible material, e.g. flexible vinylidene chloride copolymer to which a thin film of plastics has been applied, a helmet 14 provided with a transparent eyepiece (not shown), and ventilating means consisting of a single pipe 16 connected at one end to a fresh air supply and at the other end to a Y-piece union 18, one branch of the union being connected to a relief valve regulator 20 on the helmet which supplies air to the suit at two points 42 and 44 and maintains the pressure inside the suit above that outside the suit, the other branch of the union being connected to an ejector 22 for removing vitiated air from the suit, the ejector being connected to a rose inside the suit which is attached to ducts 40 with openings at the ends of the limb portions of the suit, a valve adapted to close if the air supply fails being provided between the ejector and the rose. In an alternative embodiment air is supplied through a regulating valve connected to a rose attached to ducts for distributing the air to the helmet and limb portions of the suit and vitiated air is removed by an ejector having a leak tight valve adapted to close if the air supply fails. The suit may be provided with a slit in the back portion closed by a sliding clasp fastener to enable the wearer to don the suit or may be made in units which can be joined together to form a whole suit, the slits or joins in the suit being provided with flaps which are adapted to overlap and which may be bonded to one another. The sleeves of the suit may be of raglan shape.
