Abstract

1313686 Regulating I.C. engines; engine stop gear ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 8 July 1970 [5 June 1970] 27316/70 Headings F1B and F1K The flow of air or air-fuel mixture to an I. C. engine, e.g. a reciprocating piston engine or gas turbine, is interrupted when the flow-rate is at least equal to a predetermined value. The flow is interrupted by a valve plunger 12, having a sealing ring 21, e.g. of rubber, which is mounted in the induction tube 10 and movable by the air-flow against the adjustable bias of a spring 17. The spring-biased sleeve 27 may slide over the lever 25 when the valve plunger 12 seals the tube 10 to lock the.valve (plunger) in its sealing position. In further embodiments, Figs. 2 to 4 (not shown), the valve plunger 12 is locked in its sealing position by a sprung detent (32) acting between the valve member and a stationary support rod (31 or 34). The detent may be released by an operator by access through an aperture (39) in the induction tube which is normally closed by an axially or angularly movable sleeve (40). A non-combustible gas or vapour, e.g. CO2 or a chlorinated hydrocarbon vapour, may be supplied to the induction tube through a normally closed valve which is opened when the intake manifold pressure falls to a selected value or in response to a mechanical, electrical or fluid signal derived from movement of the flow interrupting valve plunger 12.
