Abstract

1460594 Measuring fluid-flow LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 May 1974 [29 June 1973] 31083/73 Heading G1R [Also in Division F1] In a device for measuring the mass flow of air to an internal combustion engine, such as a Stirling cycle engine, the air passing through a passage 11 and controlled by a butterfly valve 12, exports a pressure on a plate valve 13 attached to a pivotally mounted arm 14, biased to the closed position against a seat 15 by a tension spring 16 and an element 18 attached to a rolling diaphragm 19. The element 18 is movable in an atmospheric air filled chamber 17, and the arrangement is such that as the air supply to the engine is varied either by a temperature sensitive element 26, responsive to the engine combustion temperature, actuating a control 27, or by a manually operated lever 28, moving the butterfly valve 12, the lower end of the arm 14 moving over an electric potentiometer 21 varies the speed of a positive displacement pump 23 via a control circuit 22to vary the fuel supply from a bank 24 to a supply point 25. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a tension spring may also be attached to the arm 14 and the element 18. The drives may be used for gases other than air and the chamber 17 may be filled with a gas other than air.
