Abstract

1312821 Curing epoxy resins CIBA GEIGY (UK) Ltd 30 Dec 1970 [5 Feb 1970] 5664/70 Addition to 1044715 Heading C3B Curable epoxy resin compositions contain as flexibilizer a polymercapto compound (I) which is an ester of a mercaptocarboxylic acid with a substance containing at least two alcoholic hydroxyl groups per molecule and containing a repeating unit: [CO(CR 2 ) m CH(R)O] in which m is 4 to 6 and in each unit at least m + 2 of the R's denote H and the remaining R's H, Me or Et. I may also act as curing agent in which case it may be present so as to provide 0À75- 1À25 mercaptan groups per epoxy group of the epoxy resin. A conventional epoxy resin curing agent may also be present, in this case I may be present so as to provide 0À1-0À4 mercaptan group per epoxy group of the epoxy resin. In an example I is prepared by (a) reaction of 0À1 mole of glycerol with 0À9 mole of #-caprolactone and (b) the waxy solid obtained reacted with 3-mercaptopropionic acid using p-toluenesulphonic acid as catalyst. Compounds I are described and claimed in Specification 1,312,822. I are used in examples with diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A either as sole curing agent or in conjunction with 3 - aminomethyl - 3,5,5 - trimethylcyclohexylamine.
