Abstract

1312712 Determination of bilirubin AMERICAN MONITOR CORP 7 April 1970 [7 April 1969] 16431/70 Heading B1X Total and/or conjugated bilirubin are determined by a method comprising a) for conjugated bilirubin, reacting the sample with a diazo compound in acid solution to produce a colour, b) for total bilirubin, reacting the sample with a diazo compound in the presence of a catalyst, for example caffeine, to produce a colour, c) in each case, providing hydroxylamine in the reaction mixture, d) in each case, measuring the colour formed. The reaction mixtures after addition of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in step c are preferably made alkaline by addition of Fehling II solution (sodium potassium tartrate and NaOH). There is reference to use of urea or sodium benzoate as alternative catalysts.
