1312421 Catalyst compositions TEIJIN Ltd 19 April 1971 [9 March 1970 10 April 1970 15 April 1970 12 Oct 1970 15 Oct 1970 19 Nov 1970 28 Dec 1970] 23531/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Catalyst compositions comprising (a) an oxide which is titanium dioxide, alumina, alumina-silica or silica (e.g. silica gel), (b) metallic copper and, optionally (c) metallic nickel and/or chromium sesquioxide are prepared by dispersing the oxide in an aqueous solution or suspension of a copper compound (with or without a nickel or chromium compound), precipitating the copper (nickel, chromium) compound from it when an aqueous solution is used, separating a mixture of solid copper (nickel, chromium) compound and the oxide from the aqueous medium, calcining, e.g. at 200-800‹C, and reducing, e.g. with H 2 , until at least the surface of the particles of the copper compound is substantially converted to metallic copper. The particles of (a) are preferably 5 to 100 microns with the metallic copper deposited on their surfaces. The catalyst may be shaped prior to reducing. Spent catalyst may be regenerated by a steam treatment at 100-500‹C, preferably followed by H 2 at 170-350‹C, or by oxidation with O 2 at 100-800‹C, followed by contact with H 2 at 170-350‹C.
