Preferably the catalyst contains 9.5-76% (wt.) of silver, 0.5-4.0% of cadmium carbonate and/or cadmium oxide (calculated as cadmiums) and 20-90% of fused alumina and the alumina has a particle size of from 2 microns to 0.5 mm. The catalyst may also contain silver chloride in an amount of between 0.03 and 0.3% of the weight of the silver present. During the oxidation process there may be introduced into the fluidised bed a chloride of sodium, potassium, lithium, barium or cadmium in an amount of 0.1-5% of the weight of silver present in the catalyst.
