Abstract

1366537 Hydrogenation catalyst ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 11 Oct 1971 47239/71 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] A hydrogenation catalyst comprises nickel supported on silica having a nickel surface area greater than 70 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a sodium content less than 0.2 wt. % based on the total weight of catalyst. The catalyst may have a total surface area of greater than 225 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The catalyst may additionally comprise a porous silica, e.g. kieselguhr, the nickel content of such a composition being 25 wt. % to 50 wt. %. The catalyst may be formed by slurrying porous silicate particles in an aqueous solution containing nickel ions and silicate ions followed by precipitation, calcination and reduction steps.
