Abstract
1311817 Carbon fibres BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [14 March 1970] 23812/71 Heading C1A Carbon fibres are produced by heating polyacrylonitrile fibres in an atmosphere containing free oxygen at between 150 and 400 C. and then carbonizing at a temp. greater than 400 C. in a moving atmosphere containing water vapour in an amount of 0À5 to 20% by volume. The water vapour may be introduced in the carbonizing zone by passing the heat treated fibre through water or an aqueous liquid when passing it to the carbonization zone. The preferred process is a continuous process, and the water or aqueous liquid is at a temp. below 100 C. and at normal atmospheric pressure. The non- aqueous component of the aqueous liquid may contain some or all of the elements hydrogen, carbon nitrogen and oxygen. The aqueous liquid may contain an acid, an alkali, an alcohol, an aldehyde, a ketone, hydrazine, or a hydrazine compound. The polyacrylonitrile fibre may be passed from a stock-roll 1 through shaping rollers 4 and tension rollers 3 through oxidizing zone 7. On leaving the oxidizing zone the fibre passes through further tension and shaping rolls 5 and 9, and is then passed via a funnel 18, into a trough 15 containing aqueous liquid which is arranged via dip-leg 20 to constitute a gas-tight barrier for the carbonizing furnace 13. The fibre leaves the carbonizing furnace to be wound up on take-up roll 11.
