Abstract
1311735 Foundry mould composition BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 6 Sept 1971 [23 July 1970] 35647/70 Heading C3N A foundry mould composition comprising a refractory filler material and a binder and further including a surface active agent so as to render the composition capable of being poured into a mould or corebox before being set by the binder is further characterized by at least 20% and not more than 80% by volume of the refractory material comprising particles or bodies too large to pass through a sieve having holes # inch in diameter. Preferably at least 40% by volume and not more than 75% by volume of the filler is as above specified, and the particles are preferably between 1/4 and # inch in size. Suitable refractory materials are broken porcelain insulator material, balls of tabular alumina, quartz gravel, or dolerite roadstone. The binder preferred is sodium silicate but the use of a resin binder is also envisaged. The balance of the filler material may be silica sand. The surface active agent may be an anionic secondary alkyl sulphate. The mould or core material, after casting, may be broken up and after eliminating the fine particles substantially all of the large-particle portion of the filler material may be recovered and be used again.
