Abstract
1311672 Electro-photographic processes MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 12 May 1970 [12 March 1969] 12904/69 Heading G2H [Also in Division B6] A printing machine operating by selective electrostatic transfer of ink comprises an electrically-insulating surface 12 having a large number of cells 13 in it. Preferably the cells 13 are floored with a photo-conductive material layer 17, which may be of zinc oxide, over a translucent layer 16 of an electrically conductive material such as a tin compound. The printing cylinder 11 runs in an ink bath 14, and the cells 13 in it become filled with ink and are swept by doctor blade 40. Exposure e.g. to a negative 22 through glass body 15, causes a photo-conductivity pattern to form in the layer 17, and application of an electrostatic field between layer 16 and an external electrode causes the conductivity pattern to be expressed in a bulging of the ink in the cells 13. The bulged pattern may be transferred to paper. Alternatively the bulged part of the image may be removed by a second doctor blade 41 and a second electrostatic field is applied to transfer ink from the previously-unbulged parts of the image. The layer 17 may be omitted if photo-conductive ink is used. A half-tone effect may be obtained by use of a progressively photo-conductive ink, or modulation of the electrostatic field which causes the ink to bulge, so that varying amounts of ink are transferred from the cells. In place of electroconductive modulation of the electrostatic field, a charge pattern may be applied directly by an electron beam, or by an array of electrodes. Two printing units, with a single electrostatic field between their cylinders, may be employed for perfecting printing. Multi-colour printing can be carried out by successive printing operations.
