Abstract
1311288 Agitating molten metals; mixing projected fluid streams R ENYA 11 March 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 11787/70 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Apparatus for melting metal includes a vessel held in a framework movably mounted on a base so that it may be caused to travel horizontally in a closed path whereby the charge rotates in the vessel about an axis offset from that of the vessel, and a cooled vertical post-mixing burner mounted above the vessel so that the flame impinges on the charge; the burner can also provide a fluid curtain surrounding the flame. As illustrated, ladle 1 is secured by clamps 13 in frame 4 which is attached to shafts 9a, 9d eccentrically mounted on rotary members 7a, 7d, the former being driven by reversible motor 12. To improve deceleration when power is cut off a gap (D 2 Fig. 7) is provided between the eccentric 7 and outer ring 32, and a further gap (D 3 ) between shaft 9 and an upper boss (36) which is secured to frame 4, these two gaps facilitating dispersal of the kinetic energy of the vessel. The burner includes concentric passages 14, 14' for fuel, such as acetylene, 15 for air or oxygen, 16 for cooling water, and 17 for water which is discharged through outlets 22 to produce a curtain surrounding the flame. Passages 14', 15 discharge through openings 21, 20 into mixing chamber 18. In a modification, Fig. 5, a group of three burners are surrounded by a common water spray conduit 28 while the weight of the ladle is supported on hollow rubber balls 31.
