Abstract

1310662 Embossing R D GLOVER 20 Jan 1972 [12 Jan 1971] 1408/71 Heading B6J A sheet of needled, non-woven material wherein the fibres and/or filaments consist of a heat-deformable synthetic thermoplastic material is embossed by depressing selected areas of the sheet with die means and heating the sheet to set the depressed fibres and/or filaments so that the embossed pattern is retained upon removal of the die means. The synthetic material may be polypropylene, polyamide, polyester or acrylic resin. The sheet may be printed before, during or after embossing using a sublimation process wherein heat is used to transfer dye from a carrier sheet to selected areas (e.g. the depressed areas) of the sheet. In a preferred embodiment the sheet material is placed on a platen 18 which is moved by a fluid pressure ram 20 to a position beneath electrically heated die-plate 22, whereupon a further ram 28 raises the platen into contact with the plate 22. In an alternative embodiment the sheet is passed between a heated grooved roller and a counter roller.
