1,161,991. Sheet forming; laminating process. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES ARTISTIQUES ET GRAPHIQUES. 22Aug., 1966 [20 Aug., 1965; 26 May, 1966], No. 37566/66. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division B6] A surface, having thereon, markings and portions in relief, is reproduced by employing a heated layer of thermoplastic material P to press a printed sheet 2a of a deformable thermoplastic synthetic resin against a mould 5 which has been shaped to form the relief portions of the said surface on the printed sheet, the printing on the surface of the printed sheet being in register with the relief portions of the mould to provide an exact replica of the surface of the pictorial object, the printed sheet having been printed to provide a reproduction of the markings on said surface. As shown, sheet 2a perforated with five holes 32 positioned to correspond with channels 8 in mould 5 is situated below polystyrene sheet P tensioned against working table 15 by pivoted frame 21. Heating elements 25 may be brought into position above the plate P to bring it to 160-180‹ C. Plate 13 is then raised to bring jaws 20 into contact with plate P and vacuum is applied to channels 8 via valve 17 to pull sheet P and thus sheet 2a against the mould. Jacks 30 are lowered and hood 27 engages jaws 20 enabling additional pressure to be supplied from source 28. According to whether the printed sheet is to be bonded to plate P or subsequently separated therefrom the unprinted face of the sheet is coated either with an adhesive containing ultra-violet absorbing salts or a silicon-based product.
