1,173,601. Creasing; embossing; Cutting. PEMBROKE CARTON & PRINTING CO. Ltd. 3 Feb., 1967 [9 Feb., 1966], No. 5608/66. Heading B6J. Cutting; creasing.-In the manufacture of cartons in which a number of identical carton blanks are cut and creased in a single operation in a press using cutting and creasing dies cooperating with bottom dies on the platen of the press, a " master " of a desired bottom die is produced (identical in form and outline shape with said bottom die) and a plurality of identical bottom dies are produced from the master (e.g. by moulding, electroforming, cutting or etching) a required number of these reproduced bottom dies is secured to the platen, one in register with each of a plurality of cutting and creasing dies made up to conform to the bottom dies, so as to match and co-operate with them and mounted in the press. In a preferred embodiment a mould is produced directly from the " master " which has been formed as an engraving on brass or steel and the identical bottom dies 13 are produced from the mould. The bottom dies are position on the platen by locating them on the cutting and creasing dies (in correct register therewith) and with spacers 32 between them and the cutting and creasing dies and closing the press with a layer of adhesive between the bottom dies and the platen so that they become correctly registered thereon. In an alternative embodiment the " master " may be formed directly as a mould. Cutting and creasing dies.-The cutting and creasing dies are made up in a frame 25, Fig. 4, mounting cutting blades 27 and creasing rule 28. Blades 27 and rules 28 are spaced apart and gripped by blocks 30 of laminated wood. In use the rules co-operate with channels 15 in the bottom dies and the blades with a hardened surface of the platen. Embossing.-Embossing pieces may be present, between the rules on the bottom dies, which co-operate with counterparts 43 on the cutting and creasing dies simultaneously to emboss the blanks as they are formed.
