Abstract
966,630. Making paper creasing dies; jointing. CONTAINER CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 30, 1962, No. 16397/62. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division B6] A method of assembling prefabricated scoring channels on a cutting jacket for the production of carboard carton blanks comprises assembling on the flat bed of the press a plurality of upstanding scoring rules, applying markings on the cutting jacket to indicate the lines of pressure to be applied by the scoring rules, releasably positioning the scoring channels on scoring rules, applying adhesive to an uppermost flat face of the scoring channels and to areas of the cutting jacket indicated by said markings, and moving the cutting jacket into pressure contact with the uppermost surfaces of the scoring channels to transfer said channels to the cutting jacket. The adhesive is allowed to dry beyond the tacky stage before assembly. As seen in Fig. 1, a press assembled according to the above method comprises the die 10 formed by locating a series of scoring rules 13 and cutting blades 14 in an assembly of wood blocks held within a steel frame co-operating with a platen in the form of a cylinder 11 on which is mounted a cutting jacket 17 to act as an anvil for the cutting knives 14 and a number of adhesively secured scoring channels 16 which may be made of brass, and which form score lines in the blank in association with the scoring rules 13. Fig. 5 shows one method of releasably mounting the scoring channels centrally on the scoring rules, the width between the channel sides 16a being greater than the scoring rule thickness by an amount equal to twice the blank thickness. A strip 20 of plastics or lead is interposed between the scoring rules and channels. A second method of centring the channels (Fig. 4, not shown) employs a rectangular bar of plastics material having in its lower face a groove of width corresponding to the scoring rule thickness, and on its uppermost face a rectangular key of width corresponding to the distance between the channel walls 16a. The guide lines for applying adhesive to the cutting jacket 17 may be formed by placing a sheet of carbon paper on the scoring and cutting rules 13, 14, placing a thin sheet such as paper on the carbon paper, pressing the paper, and adhesively securing the carbon marked sheet of paper to the cutting jacket 17 by aligning a given pair of lines at right-angles to each other on the paper with two corresponding lines already marked on the jacket. Alternatively, all the guide lines may be marked directly on the cutting jacket. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 807,251.
