Abstract

915,789. Cutters and dies. THYNE Ltd., WILLIAM. April 13, 1961 [Jan. 14, 1960; Oct. 27, 1960], Nos. 1365/60 and 36969/60. Class 31 (1). [Also in Groups XVI and XXII] A method of making a die-set for creasing and cutting cartons or box blanks comprises forming a male and female die of each die-set from two complementary matrices, producing the male matrix so as to provide a means of forming in the male die ridges, or slots to house ridge inserts, forming grooves in the female matrix which during forming of the female die produce thereon pairs of ridges, a score being formed between the ridges of each pair. A female die 1 comprising a backing sheet 2, e.g. of canvas, metallic foil, sheet metal or plastic, is pressed on to a female matrix 8 having pairs of plasticfilled grooves 9 and marked hole centres 10; upon removal of the die the plastic adheres to the sheet 2 to form ridges 3 divided by a score 4. The holes 11 are drilled or punched in the die 1 at the positions of the transferred marks 10. A male die 5 comprises casting. a resin pad 6 in a male matrix having partitions 13, rods 14, and pins 15 which produce slots for the creasing and cutting rules 7, transverse holes for rods 17 and die alignment holes 16. A number of male dies are set in a chase and located by rods 17 to make a forme and a corresponding number of female dies are registered with the male dies by means of alignment pins through holes 16, 11 prior to being secured to a cutting or make-ready plate. In a modification, the male die may be formed from a pad of thermoplastic material, the leading side of which may be cellular, pressed on to upstanding heated knives of a matrix arranged in the same manner as the partitions 13 to form slots into which are inserted the creasing and cutting rules which may be fixed with an adhesive. In a further modification, the male matrix is formed with grooves which produce ridges on the die and grooves similar to grooves 9 are formed in the female matrix which produces ridges 3 and scores 4 on the female die; in both cases the die may be made from a malleable material such as copper.
