468,942. Moulding diffraction and like patterned surfaces. MERTON, T. R. Jan. 10, 1936, No. 8050/37. Divided out of 468,893. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI] Diffraction gratings and like surface patterns are moulded by bringing a mould into contact with a layer of gel in swollen condition on a support, drying the gel so as to harden it while in contact with the mould, and using the hardened gel as a matrix for moulding film, sheet or other material. The gel may be gelatine such as a photo-engraving glue and the mould may be a collodion skin moulded from a master pattern as described in Specification 468,893. Gelatine paper may be used and impressed by a collodion skin. Cellulosic or alginic material or celluloid sheets or thermoplastic synthetic resin may be impressed by the gelatine paper as matrix. The matrix surface 29 may be formed on an endless band or a roller 30 covered with glue containing a dichromate. Collodion skin moulds 25 are squeegeed thereon and removed after drying. The glue may be converted into hard enamel by heating. The patterned cylinder is used for impressing pre-formed film or sheet material such as regenerated cellulose films, or for casting cellulose acetate thereon and removing the film so formed. When celluloid sheets are impressed, they may be softened as by pyroxylin solution applied between the mould and the sheet. The matrix surfaces in hardened gelatine or glue may be used for lining a mould for synthetic resin such as a phenol formaldehyde condensation product.
