Abstract
Heated thermoplastic sheets to be vacuum formed to produce optical quality mouldings are clamped between twin elastic sheets, which are sealed by the mould cavity clamps. The inner sheet features groups of perforations which align with the vents in the mould wall to allow total evacuation of the interfaces between (a) the rubber sheet and the mould wall, and (b) the rubber sheet and the thermoplastic sheet. Used esp. for mfr. of blisters or cockpits for aircraft, helicopters, etc. which require optical grade clarity and surface finish. The rubber liners provide a clean surface which is not as prone as the mould cavity walls to contamination between cycles, and surface temp. gradients which are less likely to promote optical anisotropy in the moulded sheet than metal surfaces on a jacket-controlled mould. Mouldings are fit for use without subsequent cleaning or polishing to remove dirt or 'toad skin' optical aberrations due to selective quenching of the sheet surface.
