Abstract

131,026. Thompson, J. L., and British Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. March 25, 1918. Transformers of the shell type have lowtension windings round the outer limbs of the core or the yoke, in addition to, or instead of, being located round the centre core. The windings shown in Fig. 1 are in two groups 6, 7, the group 6 having a part passing completely round the central core and a part passing partly round the outer limb 4, and the group 7 having a similar arrangement but passing partly round the outer limb 5, so that the total windings are arranged symmetrically about the centre line of the core. The winding may pass partly on the top or bottom yoke, or may pass round the central core and either of the side limbs 4, 5, as shown in Fig. 5. These arrangements may be applied to polyphase transformers. Where the return magnetic path comprises a number of cores 19 arranged as a skeleton cylinder round a central core, a half-turn round the magnetic circuit can be obtained by arranging a conductor 20, as shown in Fig. 7.
