Abstract

426,561. Transformers. HANSELL, J. B., 121, Eccles Old Road, Pendleton, Manchester, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Oct. 3, 1933, No. 27175. [Class 38 (ii)] A transformer having a core leg 1, low tension windings 2 and high tension windings 3 is rendered surge proof by arranging a number of series connected condensers 6 in an insulating framework 9 so that each condenser 6 is disposed adjacent to and is connected in parallel with a corresponding coil 3 of the high tension windings H, the axes of the condensers lying in planes substantially perpendicular to the axis of the transformer coils. Each condenser may comprise one or more sections which may be connected in series, parallel or series-parallel. If each condenser comprises two sections the additional sections may be disposed as shown in broken lines in the Figure. If each condenser comprises three sections they may be supported equidistantly from the coils, on the inside of an insulating cylinder arranged concentric with the coils. The condensers or the sections thereof have a length which is great in comparison to their cross-sectional dimensions and may be cylindrical or of elliptical or rectangular cross-section. The condenser arrangements associated with the coils may have equal capacities or, when one end of the high tension winding is earthed, the capacities provided in parallel with the coils may increase from the earthed to the line end of the winding. The condensers may be associated only with the coils at one end or at the middle part of the winding and may be constructed of copper foil and pressboard.
