Abstract

1309716 Centrifugal compressors BROWN BOVERI-SULZER TURBOMACHINERY Ltd 14 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 58020/71 Heading F1C A multi-stage centrifugal compressor subassembly for facilitating construction comprises impellers 2 to 7 mounted on a shaft 1 and flow deflectors 8 to 13 clamped between high and low pressure end covers 27, 19. The clamping pressure is taken up by tension in the shaft 1 by means of spacer rings 35, 36 provided at each end of the shaft and which engage the end covers 19, 27. Nuts 37, 38 clamp together the subassembly parts thereby relieving a thrust bearing 23 in the low pressure end cover 19. The end covers 27, 19 carry shaft bearings 29, 22 and seals 28, 21. The impellers are shrink-fitted, keyed or forced on to the shaft. Each flow deflector is in two halves held together by bolts 18, carries a seal 15 and is centred relative to the adjacent deflectors by shoulders. 14. Diffusers 16 having blades 17 are mounted in recesses in the deflectors 9 to 13. Rollers 45, chamfered surfaces, 47, 48 and centring surfaces 46, 49 guide the subassembly into the casing 44 .during construction. Sealing rings 42, 43 are provided between annular and circumferential sealing surfaces 54, 46 of the high pressure end cover 27 and the casing 44, a sealing ring 41 is located between flow deflector 8 and the casing, and flange on the end cover 19 seals against end 50 of the casing. Rods 40 may be provided to clamp the deflectors together. Rings 35, 36 are removed before use.
