Abstract

1408615 Axial-flow compressors; Compressor blades INGERSOLL-RAND CO 3 Nov 1972 [17 March 1972] 50776/72 Headings F1C and FIT A compressor comprises radially bladed rotor means within an annular chamber defined by a housing and extending along the rotor axis, vaned stator means within the chamber replaceably fixed to the housing, shaft means supporting the rotor means at only one axial end of the rotor means, and the rotor means including means for counteracting axial thrust on the rotor means and comprising a web formed on one axial end of the rotor means, and disposed in a recess formed in the housing conduit means in the rotor means communicating the discharge side of the compressor to one side of the web and a passageway formed in the housing to communicate the inlet side of the compressor to the other side of the web, and sealing means between the conduit means and the passageway. Stator vanes 40, Figs. 1 and 3, are pinned into mounting rings 38, each vane being set in elastomer 44 to damp vibration. The vanes are of uniform length, but the mounting rings are of increasing radial depth from the inlet end of the stator to the outlet end. The mounting rings are clamped between a shoulder 92 on a stator cylinder 36 and a retainer ring 96 which is interposed between the stator cylinder and a diffuser shell 72. The diffuser shell is connected to the compressor casing 12 through a compliant seal 76 abutting a shoulder 74, an O-ring 82 abutting a support 78, and a sliding engagement with a ring 84 welded to the casing, whereby the stator is isolated from static distortion of the casing. The rotor shaft 28 is overhung from a bearing and engages a shaft extension 68 through a three-lobed surface, the shaft extension carrying mounting rings 52 retained by a plate 90. Rotor blades 32 are secured to the mounting rings 52 by pins 56, Figs. 4 and 5, passing through bifurcated roots 54. Each blade engages its neighbour through a tang 60 and a recess 62 and through an elastomeric insert 66 engaging arcuate cut-outs 64, whereby the blades can pivot on their pins 56 about a small arc to accommodate vibration. A pair of oppositely disposed inlets 18 communicate with the inlet end of the compressor via an annular chamber 20. Rotor end thrust is counteracted by an annular piston 102 which is subjected to inlet pressure on one side via an annular passage 106 and to discharge pressure on the other side via a leakage path between an inner core 110 of the diffuser and the plate 90 and a passage 114.
