Abstract

1309505 Automatic speed control DEUTSCHE VERGASER GmbH CO KG 26 July 1971 [27 April 1971] 34937/71 Heading G3R A speed controller for an internal combustion engine adjusts the position of an air or fuel-air mixture flow valve in accordance with engine speed. The system is actuated by a thermoswitch only when the engine temperature exceeds a pre-set value. Failure of the electrical supply causes the valve to be returned to a closed or idling position. In the system shown, a comparator 12 produces an output indicative of the difference between a reference voltage from a potentiometer 13 and the voltage produced by an engine-driven tachogenerator 11. The output is amplified and drives a D.C. or stepping motor 15 connected through reduction gear 21 and a clutch 29 to a disc cam 24 controlling a butterfly valve 22. In operation, initial energisation of the system actuates a relay 20 causing a brake 17 on the shaft of motor 15 to be released. The clutch 29 remains disengaged until thermoswitch 33 closes when the engine temperature rises. Drive is now transmitted to the valve 22 until the desired speed is reached. Electrical failure causes the clutch 29 to disengage, allowing a spring 36 to close the valve 22. Alternatively, a standby source may be energized to drive the valve to its closed position. The control signal from comparator 12 may be integral or proportional or mixed to achieve optimum stabilisation in a given system. The engine may be used to drive 2-phase and 3-phase generators to produce a constant frequency output.
