Abstract

1383753 Automatic control of speed C A V Ltd 14 April 1972 (24 April 1971] 11249/71 Heading G3R Fuel is supplied to an engine 11 by an engine driven pump 10 in dependence upon the position of a control member 13, the member 13 being actuated by an actuator 14 which is driven by a driver 15 in dependence upon the control signal from an error amplifier 16, the amplifier 16 being provided with a signal representing the actual position of the member 13, via a transducer 17, and a signal from a discriminator 18 representing the required quantity of fuel for the engine, the discriminator 18 providing which ever of its two input signals is the smaller. One signal is derived from a maximum fuel processing circuit 19 this signal representing the normal maximum amount of fuel which the engine is capable of utilizing. This can be derived from the amount of smoke in the engine exhaust, the engine speed, the air temperature and pressure, and the boost pressure if the engine is fitted with a super charger. Some or all of these factors may be utilized. The other signal is derived from the error signal provided by comparing a signal representing throttle position (transducer 21) with a signal representing engine speed (transducer 22 and converter 23). The actuator 14 may be electro-magnetic, e.g. a rotary solenoid, and a current feedback loop 24 is provided to the driver 15 to minimise the effect of the inductance of the coil of the actuator. The driver may include a switched power transistor to provide a pulsed drive signal for the actuator. The actuator may be provided with a damping winding and with laminated rotor and stator structures. For safety purposes, an additional circuit may be provided to interrupt the power supply to the actuator 14 should the signal applied to it exceed a predetermined value and/or a specified value for a predetermined time. The power supply can be further interrupted should the speed dependent signal fail to reach the error amplifier 20.
