Abstract

1308378 Wear testing DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 18 July 1970 34949/70 Heading G1S A wear testing apparatus comprises two test piece mounting means 64, 81, means 32 for vibrating mounting means 64, mounting means 64 being weaker in bending than mounting means 81 by virtue of a necked portion 66, and a furnace 126 for heating test pieces 74, 92, each of the mounting means 64, 81 having a length 68 and 86 respectively of reduced cross section to reduce heat flow from the furnace. The test pieces 74, 92 are composed of the material to be tested or have a coating thereof on their contact faces which are parallel and inclined at 45 degrees to the axis of the test pieces Fig. 3, (not shown). A metal oxide coating may be tested. Mounting means 64 is located laterally by leaf springs 42 and 52 and the resonance frequency of the mounting may be adjusted by moving the spring mounting clamps 62. Cooling liquid may be passed through channel 80 in mounting means 64. In use, the gap between the test pieces is brought first to zero by rotation of threaded wheel 104 engaging threaded spindle 102 attached to mounting means 81, and then brought to the required value as indicated by dial gauge 122. The vibrator 22 is energised and in each cycle the test pieces first contact each other by impact then slide over each other. The test is continued for a predetermined time and a time switch may be provided to switch off the vibrator. Contact between the two test pieces when setting the gap between them may be indicated electrically or by feel. The amount of wear is determined by weighing the test pieces.
