Abstract

In an electron gun vapour-deposition process in which the gun heats, e.g. aluminium to deposit it on a steel strip, the thickness of the deposit is controlled by a central and two side grids in the gun, the potential to which is varied in accordance with the signal from an X-ray gauge. The gauge is moved periodically, by a motor, to measure the thickness at the centre and side of the coating. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) two stationary gauges are used instead of the movable one.
