Abstract

1308268 Automatic circuit breakers ELLENBERGER & POENSGEN GmbH 8 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970] 47073/71 Heading H1N A pushbutton actuated excess current switch comprises a bridging contact 10 pivotally mounted on a hollow rivet in a groove in a member associated with pushbutton 29, and when pushbutton 29 is depressed to close the switch a catch 37 on the member engages a catch 11 on contact 10 to depress contact 10 until a portion 12 of contact 10 engages beneath a catch 13 on a bimetal 14, a rightangled portion of a leg 23 of a torsion spring 24 engaging in the hollow rivet such that when bimetal 14 releases contact 10 spring 24 urges contact 10 upwards in a trip-free manner. The electrical circuit is from terminal 5 to fixed, contact 8 portion 9 of contact 10, portion 12 of contact 10, catch 13 and then either through bimetal 14 to terminal 4 or if terminal 4 is cut off at line 19 via heater winding 20 to terminal 6. When spring 24 moves contact 10 upwards it engages projection 39 on casing 1 and rotates, breaking contact between portion 9 and fixed contact 8. The hollow rivet engages a shoulder 33, Fig. 2 (not shown) on the member associated with pushbutton 29 to hold it down but when contact 10 moves upwards the pushbutton is released and is urged upwards by a spring 34. If pushbutton 29 is held down manually, contact 10 still slides upwards under the action of spring 24 in the groove in the member, this time pivoting when it engages a shoulder 40 on pushbutton 29. Bimetal 14 can be adjusted to vary the triggering current by a screw 18 bearing on bimetal 14. The switch can be provided with terminal prongs 5<SP>11</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 6 (not shown) and a plate having mounting (not terminal) prongs 42, 43, Fig. 6, for mounting the switch on a printed circuit board. Alternatively it can be provided with apertured mounting ears 45, Fig. 7 (not shown) or indentations 47, 48, 49, Fig. 8 (not shown) for mounting clips 50, Fig. 9 (not shown) for a plastics fastener 51, Fig. 9.
